Lock 27

(Granite City, IL)

Lock 27 required KB to add a second story expansion and provide alterations to the existing Intermediate Wall Control House at Lock 27 in Granite City, Illinois.  With the overall goal of increasing sight lines from the Control Room to be able to notice rising water levels in the locks, KB designed and built a second floor addition above the existing single story building with a new HVAC system that met energy savings and sustainability needs.

The ergonomic, functional, and comfortable control room now more efficiently performs the dam lock functions – including opening and closing lock gates, flooding and dewatering lock chambers, and communicates inbound and outbound tows. This eliminated the human effort and error associated with these activities. Along with this addition, KB applied exterior glazing systems to the dam walls that addressed glare and reflection issues while reducing maintenance.
